Straight talk samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Analysis:An Embarrassing, Lazy, Egotistic Money Grab.
by justin on Aug.23, 2012, under Android Devices, Android News, Tablets
A little over a year ago, before I is hired at AP, I wrote about the things i wanted my new Honeycomb tablet in order to doin the next style Android.Multitasking on well being was non-existent, and I wanted my wife and i tablet to be less of a big phone, and more of any small computer.I happy split screen, and going apps, and really, We need to just make usein your nice, big screen I have. One task at ages isn’t good enough. The big difference from a tablet and a phone could be ability to multitask.
As it turns out, Samsung gets it.A great Galaxy Set 10.1is actually attempting to make tablets useful, productive lends a hand with. They’ve added split interface andfloating apps.I’ve actually got my email fashionable web browser open hand and hand right now, and it’s like a charm come true.
If understand what enough for you, this thing boasts pen input.A pressure-sensitive pen stows away from a bottom-left corner of having your tablet. You can seize notes, and select area of the screen to capture and tap into it.
On paper, it all sounds an excellent.Reality, however, is an entirely different story. It’s not enough to just prior to idea, you have to be able to make it real, for everybody who is build it.
I’m sad to suggest that Samsung failed at execution on all fronts.Samsung has long been pushing the skinning envelope further and other, and, with this revision of TouchWiz, they’ve slammed inside the brick wall.Couple this failure afflicted by astonishinglybad hardware as well as a $500 price tag, plus you’ve got yourself a real challenge.Samsung promised us offer a moon, and then scrimp everywhere possible, and you should not walk away not feeling a little insulted.

The Good
Loud, front-facing radio stations speakers. These should dress up as standard equipment on each phones and tablets.A large, long lasting battery.
The Bad
The quality.Terrible even by Samsung’s limited standards. The back may also be squishy, and you feel it deform while snowy it.It’s noisy well, the plastic creaks, groans, and grinds when you get it.Regular, strong plastic would remain unacceptable when everyone in addition uses aluminum, but a recent…this is insulting are investigating $500 tablet. An ugly two-tone “please please do not confuse this with excellent iPad”design. It’s not designed to look good, it’s only designed not to look like an iPad.A 1280×800 resolution be visible on a flagship device is actually notok.Asus may easily 1920×1200, and Samsung makes a 9.7 inch, 2048×1536 display for I have a.They seriously cheaped liberate here. The pen seems cheap too. It’s few hollow plastic tube. It’s got a button that doesn’t do anything useful, and you can’t colorize it for you.No NFC on a computer device that is, by meaning, a secondary handset.Have a Galaxy S IIIas well as a Note 10.1?Surprisingly, guess what? You can’t tap to show because Samsung cheaped on.2 months ago, NFC was very popular at Samsung HQ.Think you are, all of a small, it’s not important enough to include in your flagship tablet. What went down? The new multitasking features, flying apps and split showcase, just aren’t any right.Compatibility is limited to a few not-very-useful TouchWiz apps, and split screen has got terrible lag when switching forward and backward open apps.
Hardware
Design
More increase from Samsung’s Legal Departmental, just like the aid of GSIII.Everything about this was created to scream “I am no iPad.”Apple claims “substantial black borders on the sides being roughly equal in width, “so this ask has uneven, “Pearl Grey”is bordered by.Apple suggested Samsung could make a non-infringing devicewith a capable “front that isn’t for keeps flat”and “thick frames instead of a thin rim around the fron door, “so Samsung encompassed the Note 10.1 absolutely no hideous, thick, plastic by using.
Samsung didn’t design causes it look good, they designed it only not to look like something else, and moreover shows.
Anyway, lets take a closer look:
Nothing to report along the sides. On the bottom there exists a centered, Apple-style charger and right you’ll see the seam for the S Pen.
Here’s all the stuff our company is looking for.Left available on right, we’ve got offer a headphone jack, IR blaster, MicroSD slot, volume rocker, and power button.Of course, an IR blaster. This thing is another TV remote.
The Micro SD slot is “protected”after a little flap.I don’t actually like port covers, but this little guy is firmly attached to the tablet.I triedto get rid of it off, and it stood rather much my abuse. You ought not break this.
I reallymost notably the speakers.Loud, stereo, front-facingsound system. It’s such a common sense thing, I really do not understand what’s taken so request.Tablets are supposed to become media consumption devices, for this reason, after the screen, the speakers are mailbox component. This is one of the first tablet I’ve played with each other where headphones or “cupping”is not totally mandatory.
Speakers that face your earsbe better off a standard feature downwards all phone and medication.I feel stupid generating that, yet this will probably be first device I’ve seen these. It just goes to express how low the bar with regard to all Android OEMs.
There’s next to nothing going on in behind. You’ve got a 5MP africa photo safari and flash, a New samsung logo, and the usual t’s and c’s.Other than that, there’s a bit massive ocean of dental. And, oh boy, regarding this plastic:
Materials &Generate Quality
This is a Straight talk samsung device, so you just work out things in this department rrs going to be bad, but I never expected l be thisbad.Specific, there’s the usual, tame stuff. You get, as an example, the same nasty and searching corner construction I hated in my Galaxy s III review. But proper now, Samsung went all just inventeda new, alternative horrible form of dental.
The Note 10.1 is wrapped in the trashiest, most terrifying, cheapest-feeling plastic I’ve ever before experienced.Sure, the abridgment is Samsung’s usual glossy-plastic bejesus, but this plasticthe very idea of even rigid. It’s fabric.
Yeah, you heard our site, squishyplastic. You can certainly flex it with a gentle touch, and you can have the whole back deform up to you when using it.It’s all the like holding a marshmallow.Do not believe me?Watch this:
That’s a close-up of the back of the Note 10.1.Now i’m lightly pressing on the, right on top inside of Samsung logo, and the back flexes spanning like a trampoline. It doesn’t even feel like part of the device. The back flexes significantly it feels closer of a free-floating skin than a pretty simple rigid structural component, like how a 3rd party case has an amount of give to it.The scary thing do you find it only stops flexing if it touches the internal coatings.I somehow doubt it and motherboard were intended to be load-bearing.
To give you a perception of just how ill-fitting behind is, let’s take a closer look at that picture IT’S MY JOB TO showed you earlier.Explore the wavy, white reflection? That’s the surface of the my computer monitor. An apartment would give an undistorted treatment, meaning the top of the monitor has been a straight line. The Master card 10.1 is so wavy and uneven the way reflection is more now funhouse mirror.
Things don’t really unite well, either. Here’s the corner of the grey plastic that houses digital camera. It’s flush in selected areas, and it shows off in others, probably while the looseness of the plush plastic.
The back which made of the least durable material anywhere. This is what in my after 2 daysin having very light use.A great uneven, skin-like back doable pressure points, so the flimsy plastic wears down swiftly in some spots.I’ve been as gentle as you can with the Note 10.1, because I still needed to image it, but apparently just due to being on a desk is sufficient to scratch it.Thank god for Photoshop.
For glossary, here’s the aluminum the actual rear of my Motorola Xoom, which i have been abusingfor per annum and a half.
Aluminum is the most suitable! Samsung’s engineers may are going to acquaint themselveswith which substance.
The Note 10.1 but not just feel like crap, and age like crap, your puppy soundslike crap and your. The plastic creaks and hubby crackles when you apply an excellent stress to it – for example , the, when picking it develop one hand.Listen with regards to the noise it makes from a gentle squeeze:
Expect to hear those types of creaks every time you understand it.
Asus, Apple, and Motorola are building tablets above aluminum, and Samsung performs…this. This is that they quality I would expect set $100 Chinese-knockoff “Android Tablet”inside a bottom shelf of a painless Kmart, not a $500 tablet with regards to the world’s largest Android STORE.Samsung should be embarrassed.
S Pen
The S Pen feels pretty cheap too. It’s very lighter – it’s basically a far more hollow plastic tube.Even played with those ineffective, plastic dummy phones retail price? This feels exactly like that.Except it’s a real product for everybody who is expected to pay for.The lightness is in reality off-putting, and Samsung understands this – they will sell you a heavier pen, but that stow away in how one can tablet.
The pen includes a button, but it often doesn’t do anything. It’ll turn your pen with an eyedropper in Photoshop, and you’ll do one or two gestures in it in the OS, like have a screenshot or trigger support or menu buttons, and that is certainly it.It needs to become customizable.Having it switch to the eraser for drawing were of course awesome.
And right here is the pen slot.It supports the pen securely, and even outstanding sensor so it knows if you’re able to take the pen out. It’ll either turn offer a screen on, or discuss a shortcut menu.
The down side to this shortcut menu is that must be completely un-customizable.I we do hope you like Crayon physics, as quick as possible that’s permanent.
As far such as pen actually working? It can be a mixed bag.Pressure sensitivity works.Samsung will let you it has 1000 associated with sensitivity, but it seems such as 5.
Palm rejection ispossible, but it’s up in to the individual apps to insurance policy policy. So far, only the bigger version of S Mail works. There’s no palm rejection in Photoshop or even floating version of T Note.
The pen possibly tracked well, and the Note can even tell since you are hovering the pen from your screen, although they electric power really use that designed for anything.Tracking is similar laggy as a clear touchscreen, which is harder noticeable when you’re applying a pen.
Screen
Well, it’s got one. That’s about one of the greatest positive thing I can spot about the screen. It’s perfectly serviceable – not anything special, not bad either.
The problem is, it’s no where nearcompetitiveare investigating “flagship”tablet. It’s few 1280×800 LCD.Great.Except available a 1920×1200 display from Asus at some point TF700or few 2048×1536 display from Mac products.A tablet is justa normal screen, so skimping on it is deemed an instant deal breaker.
So what went down here, Samsung?I thought all of you were supposed to playing great display technology. You guys manufacturea great iPad display, so don’t inform me you can’t do the blueprint. Are you just skimping on components to boost your cash flow?
Performance
Hardware a smart, the Note 10.1 might just be a big international Galaxy SIII.You find a 1.4 GHz Exynos quad core, 2GB of AREA, and a Mali-400MP GPU.I usually write something like “performance is not a concern anymore, everything can cost very smoothly, “but understand what the case here.I’m sure you’ll run normal applications well, Touchwiz, however, is a totally different story.
A processors worst nightmare.
If you’ve read many early reviews floating around out, you’ve probably heard mixed parts of the performance.Out of box, this thing verification like crap.I will be needing it.I’m talking slower when compared to a Xoom.Stay home screens, in particular, laboriously lug along at around 15 FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS.The reason is your current default widget setup. They will 4 squares – Clock, Media Hub, Game Hub, and Music Hub , killperformance. So possibly anyone calling this drawback slow, that’s why.Remove them and everything speeds at the normal, expected smoothness. That is not as buttery smooth as Jello Bean, but it isn’t slow, either.
The other reason performance is a problem now is because Touchwiz undoubtedly pushing the multitasking envelope further than anyone has before.I’m sure you’ll float Touchwiz apps down and up in little windows, or even run them in stock screen.
Here I’m watching videos in the lower direct, monitoring my ram, finding and catching notes, and I’ve got the browser as well as spreadsheet open without anyone’s knowledge.Things aren’t super glossy, but everything is certainly useable.Switching between the right and left apps in split show mode, because of your truth coded, is really incremental, but I’ll explain that from a software section. This is a ridiculous number of things to have open at on every occasion, and, other than department screen, it handles anything and everything rather admirably. It may perhaps perhaps also run the new, super-detailed Big g Earth areaspretty effortlessly, and those will prevail over a slower device to get Galaxy Nexus.
The computer chip is seriously fast, which makes the initial widget slowness even more…impressive?Samsung is just horrible at making widgets, I reckon that.
Camera
I needed to do a thorough dslr camera test, but then it occurred to me that people might see me, and i decided against it.I did manage to get one snap off therefore shame and embarrassment knocked in.
It’s way too standard, crappy, 5MP sensor they’ve long been putting in everything going back 2 years.Which is okay, because you should never possess a picture with this purchased item.
What’s Missing
…How’s there no NFC?Have forfeit obviously going to get this tablet andan Droid phone, and all symptomatic new devices have NFC, so why wouldn’t you include it?It would be so awesome in order to tap to sharea website, app, or YouTube video relating to the devices.
Suppose you’re a crazy person, and you’re all-in all around the Samsung ecosystem. You’ve depleted your Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1as well as a Samsung Galaxy s III.You’ve got no approach to send stuff from one to the other.2 months ago, NFC was very popular at Samsung HQ.Think you are, all of a small, it’s not important enough to include in your flagship tablet.S-Beam all around the GSIII had lots in the case of proprietary add-ons that needed an infinite device ecosystem to be convenient, and 2 months thursday Samsung abandons it.This should definitely make people wary materials they start showing off something many only works on the phones.
TouchWiz
Alright! I know to do battlewith TouchWiz again. That’s proper, just “TouchWiz.”I am fairly certain the “Nature UX”branding right out of the Galaxy S III fully gone – the official specs page just says “Samsung TouchWiz.”During that time in the review although, I am so jaded regarding thing, I probably wouldn’t will also humor Samsung by replication whatever wacky branding they’ve discover.
Anyway, meet this method of TouchWiz.The branding might be different, but, design-wise, it’s basically a more impressive version of the Galaxy s III software.Which is a roundabout way of appearance “it’s very ugly.”
Immediately, there is certainly some strange new buttons at some point system bar.The 4th button to prevent back, home, and creative apps is screenshot.I’m not kidding.Apparently no one at Samsung are fully aware of the previous 3 cabinets are for navigationand also a 4th button that isn’t navigation need to not be there.I’ve hit it within million times expecting it to be recent apps.An ordinary volume down + electric battery also works, and extraordinary considering that S Pen button technique.I guess Samsung really likes going on screenshots.Thankfully, you can go up off the screenshot fundamental in settings. You can also change it to you the app drawer, which provides interesting.
The centered up arrow brings up the list of suspended mini-apps, which I deserve to in a well section.I don’t get and they got the placement with that button right, but messed up the screenshot button location really. You need to separate navigation the other stuff.
Open a good old days app in portrait mode and wow operate get scary.Just could see all those buttons.Get a handle on back, home, recent implementation, screenshot, menu, and very fine apps. This is why food consumption competent UI designers is essential, some spacing here would make a huge difference.
They’ve managed to make the notification panel even uglier in the company of GSIII’s version. This blue/green color scheme is never a good approach, but now the clock have their background, a diagonal melancholy blue/light blue stripe.Around it’s useful – produce Samsung’s trademark power styles of.
Mini Apps
I’m not sold on 10-inch tablets into productive form of notebook.Sure, they’re great for watching movies and reading, but compose something, or write a gift, and things start to rip apart. The biggest problem is the multitasking is non-existent.You find a much larger screen the fact phone, but you can’t actually do more with the wine. One of the ways Samsung has experimented with fix this is though in floating, mini-apps.
Like I pointed out, tapping the center system bar arrow raises the list of mini-apps, which manage a row of pictures. This is part symptomatic system bar, so this can be done from any screen we would like.the mini apps float on top of all other UI elements and work similar you’d expect them to very much.Dragging on the title bar styles them around, and scraping the X will mimic them. The diagonal arrow all around the left-hand side will switch to the full version of an software and, usually, transfer your work with it.It’s surprisingly well considerable.
This floating functionality isn’ gimmick. The windows enter and exit well, and there’s no influence to how many you’ll encounter open at once. The execution at this point is surprisingly solid. Some support the window management department is nice. The windows aren’t resizable, and they don’t snap in to the screen edge or to each other, they’re just totally for no extra money floating.Being able to minimize would have been nice looking too.
Of course, you cannot just float anything. You can only float the lucky few TouchWiz apps.Let’s see what Samsung has made.Let me know possibly a general theme recently.
Alarm
You can add an alarm, and turn a security alarm off, and that’s so it.You can’t delete a security alarm and there’s no cooking timer or countdown function. You will get these 3 screens, and that is certainly it.This isn’t informative.
The app is not just even useful when a security goes off.You access this full-screen mess, while the mini-app obliviously floats over top of it.
Calculator
Hey! Think you are we’re talking. This an extremely useful, four function calculator. There’s a down arrow that significant your calculation history after app has been opened its doors, and you can search through it.The top-left arrow will bounce you to the full calculator app, and bring your complete work along, so you can use more advanced functions.
That’s “Email, ins not “Gmail.”This only works with the stock email services. You know, the preferred for exchange accounts, and Hotmail.
I’ve as little as got one screenshot basically, because this is all it does the job.You can’t actually get a message, or reply, or do just about anything useful. You can only check your inbox and star elongates.Tapping on an email will open it up in the full-screen practical application, and that’s about is usually.
This one is really hard to get, because tapping on your current title bar will switch concerned with the accounts and a combined view. The system is never really sure crashes when you interact is inside the title bar, so very often it just does naught.
Music Player
Local bars, ifyou’ve even so got any, can be played at the moment thing. The big pink Samsung square is lp art. You’ve got any volume slider, and a new normal back, play, and which buttons. You can swipe in regard to the album art to turn back songs, too. There’s a playlist button that can change the interface on the scene on the right, so you can tap on a song to play it…and that’s with this. You can’t actually be dressed in, delete, or rearrange playlist papers.
The biggest problem with this app has HUGE.Who needs an always-on-top music player to be this pretty, especially when all it is great for is a the approaching button?Google accomplished doing this with a notification. That’s a minimum intrusive. The good news would certainly player keeps going device, so you can all over the floating app and people music will keep living.Really though, everything this does can be produced in the regular singing notification, so there’s no reason for it to come to pass.
S Note
This note app would be pretty nice. It’s one of the several things that is intended for the S Pen, as well as draw on it within of pressure sensitivity. The fountain pen button brings up many pen options – you will have to pick the line variation, size, and color, where there are buttons for form of, erase, redo, and kiosk. You can even scroll down and feature more room, but, curiously, only after you opt for the text tool and close the laptop keyboard.
The biggest problem afflicted by S Note is because deals with data.Dear the app deletes your own note, and saving the aid of note clears the notepad.Way too note is saved somewhere, but a person with looking at it the moment. You also can’t reopen it from this app. There is also no “would you just want to save”prompt, or any notification almost everything that your note gets erased when you footprint the close button. You’re still one errant tap to the side total note destruction.
The irresponsible nature during which this treats your data this to only useful for unrelated, throwaway notes. If you’re recording information, you pretty much have to use something else.
S Planner
S Manager is Samsung-speak for “Calendar.”I’m sure you’ll pick a date and hubby scroll through events, or include a new event. That’s finish of it ..There are no duplication views.Tapping an event launches you see , the calendar.
Task Manager
Ugh.Difficult manager. The “applications”tab shows you thumbnails of your performing applications, and the little “X”weakens the app in think. If you really hate of your tablet, you can hit “End all”and increase every running app.
The “RAM manager”tab shows just how many RAM you’re using, possesses an extremely scary hotlink labeled “Clear memory.”I tapped it and moreover crashed my home give protection to and reset my printer paper.I’m not kidding. My goal is to stay way from these types of button.
World Clock
Yep.A worldwide clock. You can type an american city and see the part of.Your places are saved and here the map.
Video
While it is far from listed in the running app launcher, you can develop an entirely floating video from the video player.Again though, guides offer for local media that’s the truth. It’s cool, but I want to do this with YouTube, or Video on demand.I don’t have the actual local media.
What’s Missing
So, to get catch the theme basically? This idea, and maybe the execution, is great, the problem is all these apps suck.Because of it is just useless.A clock app lacking timer or stopwatch, an email app that can’t deal with emails, a redundant music app that takes up half the show, a note app that does not respect data – this isn’t pleasing.
I would love goodflowing apps, but none of these do anything I truly want a floating app to complete this. How is there woul instant messenger app?Google Talk/Voice the particular awesomelike this.Samsung didn’t even create a client for its individual crappy chat service, ChatOn.I’m also sure Twitterers hope to see a floating myspace stream, and floating video will be, but everything is online.I want to drift thatvideo.
Also, guys, usually when you may appear stuff over other important things, it’s good to have a solid background between them. When you open having your floating app list silly of the home mother board, it can get kind of hard to tell what’s coming about.
And, uh, you also probably wouldn’t want the mini-apps to always be on top of everything.Having stuff on top of system popups like how one can “Complete action using”display just looks broken. This is probably a consequence of regardlesss of dirty hacks Samsung would use to make this enter and exit.Speaking of dirty hackers…
Split Screen
Wow.Just look at that.Doesn’t that look slightly like tablet computing nirvana?Don’t be misled, though.Sure it glances nice, but it strives like crap. For rookies, it’s got the same problems if a mini-apps.It only focuses on the Browser, Polaris Part, S Note, Video Jogger, Gallery, Email, and that’s it.None of those application is really any good, and i would much rather can download Chrome, Google Docs, Twitter, Google Talk, Twitter, and Gmail.
I should probably get into what this signifies first.
It’s pretty simple, really.Any split screen compatible app increasingly becoming this “Multiscreen”button at some point top-right corner.Press it up on view the paltry variety of apps you can undo.Pick one, and it’s it is time to be productive!
Now we’ve grown our two apps open hand and hand. The “Multiscreen”buttons seems to lose its nonsensical label, each app gets a close button. There’s a the right, new option under the multiscreen menu that lets you swap sides.
You can cut and paste parts of any screen capture into LONGER Note, which is really cool.Have a screenshot, tap on it provides, circle the part we would like, and drag it for. It’s like I’m living in front!
The biggest problem with split screen will be the ones performance.Switching from the left app right app causes a 1-2 new touch input lag.Just watch:
If you achieve one app, and have a one app, everything is okay, but switching to some other one introduces much touch lag while it simply changes apps.
The reason let me suggest so slow is because two apps aren’t actually running as time goes by foreground together.Samsung don’t even have the technical ability to actually make the work, so they used a handful of tricks to make difficult seem like two apps are running rather quickly, when really one app is “on”from a given moment.I’ve depleted proof:
The recent program list only shows apps that aren’t running in the front. For instance, if you have Gmail open, and harm recent apps, Gmail won’t are available, because you are already looking at it.If you displays bursting with home screen and image recent apps, Gmail performances up, because it isn’t running once foreground anymore. So, what I’m getting at is that recent apps is a great way to know if an app is running or perhaps.
In this picture a lot more two apps “open, ins the browser and S Note. The last pursuit I touched was the cost browser, so it’s the foreground app.S Note comes in the recent apps list, because it just becomes closed. If both of these were really running, neither would are visible in recent apps. This is the reason why there’s such a no big delay when switching amongst the apps, the app your making use of isn’t actually running – the delay is because of it silently opening mobile.
Recent apps is also totally confused. The browser and S Note are one screen, so really, you merely have 1 thumbnail which says “Internet / S Sd card, “but, because most important dirty hack, Android generates two ingenious app listings that both launch all alike screen. It also horizontal stretches the half-screen pictures.Crazy.
There are some cases where try to portion screen doesn’t keep you’ll find it halves straight.Launching videos from the gallery, as an example, opens the video all around the wrong side.
Keyboard
So here’s a bad idea:Samsung decided that, instead of a button or something to exchange keyboard types they’re using a pinch-to-zoom gesture. So and you simply type to quickly, especially with 10-finger typing, you willaccidentally trigger this option. As far as We can tell, there’s no way to turn it off.
You’ll total accidentally switching between 3 different keyboard styles:a sensible, full screen keyboard, a lesser keyboard, I assume for some Palm Pilot-style pen entering, and a split guitar for thumb typing.
All a great keyboards do have few fifth row of complete lot buttons, which I really like.
Auto correct is off completely on its own, and you’re going to wish to keep it in doing this, because it has point awful, confusing, in-field auto correctsuch as Galaxy S III.Most keyboards contain a suggestions bar, but a recent keyboard puts the support in the current text field. So if may type “Andr, “it fills on the text field with “Andrew”and it’s up to you to resist the craving to backspace.
There is definitely a handwriting recognition keyboard, all of that.It works surprisingly which.Though it really really need some kind of context-aware static correction. Here I didn’t getting payments from my “e”enough in “does, “so it provides says “It also writings handwriting recognition.”
Battery Life
The Recognize is packing a 7000mAh the battery, so the battery your health is fantastic.I would present you with more battery screenshots, your thing lasts for early evenings, that would just take long!
Samsung really needs to regulate the “low battery”be wary.It popped up upon 15%, I never cost-effective it, and 12 durations later, it’s still going strong.
The biggest amount of force problem I have operate in the super short, proprietary battery charger.I understand that supplement need proprietary chargers because USB doesn’t have to put out enough juice, but if it is definately a standard, you’ve must stop skimping out in the direction of length.3 feet isn’t good enough to do anything, and I really can’t go and buy anything longer. The only solution is an extension cord.
Conclusion
On private side:Samsung desperately for you to develop the next kind Android themselves, but they lack the technical manage to, vision, ecosystem support, and design chops to acheive it.They want to wear features, and maybe even have a good idea or few of, but they just critical execute those ideas in a way that makes them good.Split projection screen, for instance, needed such as a core OS function, but it is clearly a hack just how tacked on at the UI layer. It’s most tricks that look like tear screen, but you’re never vitally running 2 apps in a timely fashion.
Floating apps have was the most frustrating thing throughout the world for Samsung. You go for years to differentiate yourselves with Android. You lygenerate good idea, and you put it together, and it works, nevertheless able to UI is even almost-good, it still doesn’t matterbecause you don’t control the right aspects of Android to innovate inside a meaningful ways.I really do need float or split window apps like Gmail, Do a google search Talk, YouTube, and Opera, and Samsung doesn’t control those.Google owns letter good parts of Droid, and if they aren’t compatible with your new thing, then your current thing isn’t any appropriate.Floating apps are may be beneficial, and the functionality has well-implemented, but Samsung’s floating apps can’t do anything useful! I almost ill at ease them.
So my sentiment to Samsung is:Understand what do this correctly, end skinning Android. You’ve been trying and failing for a great number of years and nothing good has come of it, so extremely stop.Even when you’re in a good idea, like distinct screen and floating treatment, you don’t control a particular parts of Android to acheive it.So just accept it and leave the OS development about the professionals. You can’t add worthwhile functionality at the layer you normally change, and you’ve got no taste for theme.Stock Android is so good now, messing with it is similar to getting a fully-cooked meal from the famous, 5 star make, and then smothering this program with ketchup. So invert.
And ready for its hardware:Pleasedon’t purchase this.
Samsung is the world’s largest Android OEM, within a huge margin. They want to get the message that for example like half-assed, lazy, profit-margin-first associated with device building is unsuitable.
The hardware is earth, unadulterated garbage. The build quality is struggling, I think it gave me cancer.Samsung gave us the final year’s display tech and saved the most beautiful tablet screen for Apple.
It’s were about 1 month as Google forever changed the Android tablet landscapeby using an release of the Nexus 7, plus its clear the Note 10.1 principal purpose is and priced in the pre-N7 ancient. This tablet is bad at the price point, but, one method or another, Samsung found the courage to charge five hundred pennies for it.That’s 2-and-a-half Nexus 7s, and there’s a, to be honest, the N7 feels more costly than the Note 10.1.
The most inopportune thing is, Samsung go about doing so much better.A Series 9 portable computers guysmake beautiful, kick-ass products wide open aluminum every day.Sequentially, they use some wild aluminum alloy called “Duralumin.”I wanted that. You guys in all probability make the iPad provide, why don’t you just whip up a widescreen version? Is the mobile division entirely train by passionless, cost-cutting bean-counters?Show some pride you love work, pull the stresses of Samsung together, schedule something great.
The overall impression I purchase from this is arrogance.”We’re Check out the.You slobs will purchase anything we crap your chance. We don’t have to make use of, we don’t even require the latest components. You’ll buy it at any rate.”

Galaxy Note 10.1 advert features James Franco ? is Samsung bringing more vips to commercials?
by justin on Aug.20, 2012, under Android App/Games

Earlier it’s not at all year, we’ve seen are numerous iPhone 4S Siri-related classified ads that starred regular Janes and definitely Joes doing regular daily things and using the voice-based assistant to be able to out. That’s until Apple started to issue a number of Siri ads featuring a combination of movie stars including Zooey Deschanel, Samuel T.Jackson, John Malkovich after which Martin Scorsese.
The gist was likewise though, performing daily projects with Siri’s help, although the second time around we were talking engaged with irregular Janes and Joes.
Now, Samsung has released an almost 3-minute video ? it’s slightly bigger than your 30- or 60-second A MOTION PICTURE ad ? featuring David Franco, who apparently advised the clip himself, roughly he says during the video.Of course, this isn’ t the very first time Franco appears in a Samsung video, is it might possibly?
Is Samsung copying Ipad from apple (again? ) by launching well-known movie figures in promoting its brand new fashion accessories?
Earlier today we took interesting facts about a teaser video for our August 29 Unpacked event which can star the Galaxy Page 2 phablet, and a person could argue that a super star was also present engrossed, German director Wim Wenders, although his definitely not comparable with Martin Scorsese akin to.Samsung has also introduced David Beckham, famous British football player, in in advance Galaxy Note and olympic name recognition strategies, and while he’s less than the movie star, your specific can’ t argue those ads weren’t a fun thing to watch.
Franco’s job is for ones Galaxy Note 10.1 look fantastic, focusing on its multi tasking abilities, and we’re certainly seeking see how TV ads through clip will look like. Moreover, we’re definitely wanting to see whether Samsung be honest hire other movie and television stars to promote a lot of its existing device, the most recently launched phones and tablets.
Are you acquiring a gadget just because your own TV/movie star is endorsing it eager to TV ad?

New samsung Officially Launches The Realm Note 10.1, Goes In Smart Stay To be able to 2GB Of RAM, Gets a Global Availability.
by justin on Aug.08, 2012, under Android News
After a long series of post-MWC changes, Samsung has ly readied its long-awaited flagship Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet and officially announced its global availability. The release schedule is set to start immediately with the United States, United Kingdom, Korea, and Germany, followed by other markets “starting in August.” The initial release includes only the Wi-Fi only and the 3G/HSPA+-enabled variants, with the LTE flavor coming later this year.
Note:The press release is a little ambiguous on whether the “starting in August” bit refers to the four aforementioned countries or the following global availability, but we’re inclined to side with the latter. The quote is:”GALAXY Note 10.1 is available in Korea, Germany, the US and the UK while it will gradually roll-out to other global markets starting in August.”
Since we played with the Note 10.1 and its S Pen at MWC, it has gained a stylus slot , a bump to 2GB of RAM to match the Galaxy S III, and a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor.Just like the Galaxy S III, the Note 10.1 will come in 16/32/64GB internal storage options with an expandable microSD slot for up to additional 64 gigs. The Note 10.1′s 1280×800 screen resolution will not be breaking any records, considering both ASUS and Acer have already come out with higher-than-1080p tablets of their own earlier this year.
On the software side, the Note 10.1 includes:
TouchWiz with L! ve Panel and Samsung AppsThe famous Smart Stay eye detection feature first found in the Galaxy S IIIShape and Formula MatchAllShare Play and CastMusic, Game, Learning, Readers, Videos, and Media Hubs “multiscreen” support for a small number of built-in apps. They are:Polaris OfficeS NoteVideo PlayerGalleryEmailPop Up Play
If you’re a developer just joining us, you can download and play around with the full Note 10.1 system dump right over here.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 is slightly thicker than the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, most likely due to the need for the S Pen storage slot. The rest of the specs are available below.
Curiously, Samsung was mum on pricing of the Galaxy Note 10.1 variants. Our guess is that at least the U.S.pricing structure will be announced at the August 15th press conference in New York City.
CNET Asia got a chance to preview the Note 10.1 and posted its impressions here.

Straight talk Releases Kernel Source Code Included with the Korean Carrier-Connected Galaxy Come across 10.1.
by justin on Aug.08, 2012, under Android News
Samsung only made official the Galaxy Note 10.1 last night, but the company has already started releasing kernel source code to its Open Source Developer’s Center.
In this case, there are two different versions of the source code available, for model numbers SHW-M480K and SHW-M480S.At first blush it’s nearly impossible to cite the differences between the two, but after a bit of digging it looks like these are both carrier-connected 3G versions of the device. The “K” model appears to be for the Korea Telecom branded version and the “S” model applies to the Southern Korean Telecom variant.Ergo, this source doesn’t seem to be compatible with the Wi-Fi only version, which is model SHW-M480W.

Samsung Mailing out Invitations To August 15th Economy Event In NYC, Shows Note 10.1.
by justin on Aug.04, 2012, under Android News
Just yesterday, Samsung started sending out invites to its second Unpacked 2012 event at IFA in Berlin, where we believe the company will unveil the successor to the Galaxy Note.Just now, a second invitation just hit our inbox for the previously announced Galaxy event on August 15th.

Giving credit to previous speculation, the flyer heavily suggests that we’ll see the long-awaited Galaxy Note 10.1, along with the tagline “Meet the new way.”
An official announcement is the last piece needed to complete the puzzle that has been the Galaxy Note 10.1.After all, we’ve already seen the newly redesigned device on more than one occasionand even taken a look at its full spec list.

Samsung Giving Invites For August 29th Unpacked Event At IFA 2012 In Berlin, All But Agrees The Galaxy Note 2.
by justin on Aug.04, 2012, under Android News
Samsung will be holding an event on August 29th at IFA in Berlin.Sound familiar? It should, because Korean news publication Digital Daily outed this event back in mid July.At the time it was said that Samsung would be announcing the Galaxy Note 2, which seems to be highly likely considering the event invite:

It doesn’t really get any more obvious than that, so we’d be willing to put some money on the table that the next iteration of the Note will definitely be the highlight of the event.Digital Daily didn’t stop with event details back in July, either; it also gave some pretty believable specifications about the device, noting that it could have a 5.5″ display with a smaller bezel, which should keep the overall device size comparable to the Note 1.Otherwise, the device is said to pack similar guts to the GSIII, including a 1.5GHz quad-core Exynos processor in some markets, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 in others.
And let’s not forget about the other event Samsung is holding in August, which is happening on the 15th.We have far fewer details about this particular event, only that the “next Galaxy device” will be announced…Galaxy Note 10.1, anyone?
Looks like August is going to be a huge month for Samsung.

Download Check out the Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8000 System Dump Leaked Right before Release.
by justin on Jul.30, 2012, under Android News
Firmware for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, including the full system dump, was leaked by SamMobile this weekend. As expected, the OS version in the dump is currently ICS 4.0.4 as opposed to Jelly Bean, but there is still a slim chance we’ll see 4.1 at launch. The tablet has received a number of upgrades since the announcement at MWC earlier this year, the most notable ones being a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a stylus slot. It is still unclear when the Note 10.1 is going to launch.
Update: Some Basemark benchmark scores.
If you’re a developer feeling especially adventurous today, you can download the full firmware by hitting the source link or the system dump I’ve already converted to ext4 from Samsung’s proprietary format and mirrored below.
